Fish Grow (1)
Checkerboard Cichlid (Dicrossus filamentosus)

Competition Duration: 5/4/2007 through 11/2/2007       View This Competition Photo Album - Winners and Participants

General Information: Checkerboard Cichlids should be avoided by the beginner aquarist as they have special water quality requirements. For the more experienced aquarist it is an excellent dwarf cichlid for the first time cichlid keeper. Relatively easy mannered, will be mildly territorial towards each other and more peaceful towards different species. Safe to keep in the planted tank as these fish do not dig and will not eat or rip out plants. If kept in community tanks avoid keeping with aggressive fish as well as fast moving nippy fish. Cardinal tetras, Corydoras catfish as well as Discus would all be safe choices for a community tank.

Fish Grow (2)
Red Phantom Tetra

Competition Duration: 5/4/2007 through 11/2/2007       View This Competition Photo Album - Winners and Participants

The Red Phantom prefers lots of plants, driftwood and rocks. It is a timid, slow moving tetra and will school for security. Groups of 6 or more are recommended. Fast swimming tank mates are not a good combination with Red Phantoms. Similar to the Black Phantom, they will twist and turn around each other in intricate displays. They will eat food flakes, spirulina, freeze-dried bloodworms and live foods, such as brine shrimp and bloodworms. A healthy diet is essential in bringing out full coloring.

Dwarf Sword

Competition Duration: 5/4/2007 through 11/2/2007       View This Competition Photo Album - Winners and Participants

Due to poor conditions and late arival of the Crypt Becketti, we have changed the April-October grow plant to a variety of dwarf sword.

In addition, due to the fact the plants were not distributed until May, the competition will end in November. The following competition however will last only for 5 months so we can get back on track.

Program: Ted Judy

Ted Judy lives in Stoughton, WI, where he is a full time aquarist, dedicating a lot of his spare time to fish clubs across America. Ted has been keeping fish since 1978. His main aquarium fish interests these days are the dwarf cichlids of West Africa and South America, though he has kept many different types of fish over the years.

Ted’s current projects include his web site... www.tedsfishroom.com and an attempt to acquire, maintain and breed rare (and frequently threatened) West African cichlid species.

Ted is a past resident of Colorado and has been active in the Colorado aquarium societies. Don’t miss the general meeting or the picnic as it will surely prove to not only a good time, but an informative time.

Program: Pond set-up, plants, maintenance, etc. by Cindy Thomas
Cindy Thomas was born and raised in the Denver metropolitan area and is a Metro State graduate. She is a Master Gardner and a Wildlife Master. Like many people, she got her first aquarium when she was a child, (a parental training tool to teach responsibility). She also used this method to teach her children, but has since adopted it as her own and has kept a variety of fish in this 35 gallon tank. Beside the 35 gallon tank, she currently has ponds and water gardens. At one time she had an indoor pond that was made from wood and ceramic tiles for keeping her plants in for the winter. She has been President, Vice President and several other positions for the Colorado Water Garden Society and has been very active in that club for many years. She has written several articles for the Rocky Mountain News and the Denver Post, and has done several workshops for various garden centers in the Denver area.

Program: Christina Pearson - President - Rocky Mountain Reef Club

Christina has been keeping reef aquaria since 2004. She currently has a 120 gallon tank with mostly soft corals and traditional fish only specimens, two lionfish, a trigger, a tang, a wrasse, and a toadfish. She also has a 23 gallon nano reef with an anemone and a pair of percula clownfish, a bicolor blenny, a spotted hawkfish, a clown goby, an urchin and a starfish. She is currently planning a large display tank for the basement (300 gallons) and a fish room with frag tanks. Christina has been captive propagating corals since 2005 and is committed to the mission of the Rocky Mountain Reef Club:

“The Rocky Mountain Reef Club is dedicated to the endorsement, education, and fellowship of captive marine systems hobbyists in the Rocky Mountain region. We will increase awareness among members and the public of the importance and value of marine ecosystems and their preservation through captive propagation and responsible collection of organisms. We will deepen hobbyists’ knowledge about the husbandry and study of marine plants and animals, increasing the longevity and well being of the creatures in our care”.

Fish Grow
Black Ruby Barb (Puntius nigrofasciatus)

Competition Duration: 11/3/2006 through 5/4/2007       View This Competition Photo Album - Winners and Participants

Plenty of room should be provided for this fish, with plenty of light with a shallow covering of floating plants and ample vegetation (half to two-thirds of the tank area). A layer of humus should be left on the bottom. This species is good for keeping with other barbs and similar fish. In captivity, the fish are omnivorous, with a healthy appetite.

Plant Grow
Water Sprite (Ceratopteris thalictroides)

Competition Duration: 10/6/2006 through 4/6/2007

This plant normally grows fast, but the addition of CO2 may be necessary to promote growth. In small open aquariums it can grow out of the aquarium and form beautiful surface leaves. The finely branched leaves are very decorative and provide good contrast to other leaf shapes. In good light Ceratopteris thalictroides grows fast and helps prevent algae by consuming large amounts of nutrients. This makes it a good starter plant in small aquariums.
