April General Meeting:
Program: “Madagascar’s Freshwater Fishes” - Alex Saunders
Alex became fascinated with fish after watching countless Jacque Cousteau specials while living on the pacific coast of Canada. After brief stints as a whale trainer, mechanical engineer, and fisheries consultant he arrived at the Denver Zoo in 1996. Alex now manages an extensive collection of freshwater and marine fish and invertebrates. The main focus of his collection is the captive breeding of Madagascan endemics, and this project has taken him to Madagascar four times, most recently in the fall of 2006. He is currently updating the Madagascar Endangered Fishes website @ www.madagascarfish.org

Madagascar Lace Plant

Competition Duration: 12/8/2007 through 4/4/2008

‘Aponogeton madagascariensis which is known as the Madagascar Lace Plant, is one of the most highly prized plants in the hobby. Its leaves are broad and long with a very delicate lace appearance. Under the right conditions, these plants will flower regularly in the aquarium. This plant is more demanding than most, but is well worth the extra effort.’ - Planted Tank

Plant Grow (2)
Gracilaria (Salt Water)

Competition Duration: 12/8/2007 through 4/4/2008

Gracilaria - Donated by FloridaPets.com

Pipefish and seahorses love to dawdle among it. And, many fish and critters like to eat it. It’s very “branchy.” Its branches feel as if they are full of water. The macro will take some nutrients out of your water, however has not grown very quickly for us. Gracilaria is a very attractive piece of the sea and is usually purchased as food or an addition to make the inhabitants of your aquarium feel at home. Pods will frolic and breed within it. This macro ranges in color. The Gracilaria that we have right now is dark brownish/red. ... Collected in Florida by FloridaPets, it is seasonal and at times cannot be found. Gracilaria in general, changes color after acclimating to a new environment. Don’t be surprised if you receive a pretty tan piece and in the next few days it is a beautiful dark brown.
