December Holiday Party: Holiday Party, Pot Luck, Awards, and Gift Exchange

Our Holiday Party / Potluck for December will be held at:
6:00pm on Saturday December 11th.

Anyone who can assist with set-up and
decorating, please come at 4:30

Bring Food at 5:30

Each family is requested to bring a side dish or dessert.

Anyone who would like to participate in our ‘White Shark’ gift exchange should bring an un-wrapped fish related gift in a paper bag. These gifts are very fun and while there is not any limits on price range, they usually value between $5 and $20 and are in some way fish related, though they do not need to be aquarium supplies. The unlabeled gifts are placed on a table and numbers are drawn to participate.  When your number is called, you have the option to pick a new gift from the table or “steal” a gift from someone else.  Once a gift has been held by the same person three times, they keep the gift and it can no longer be stolen.  When all the gifts are taken from the table, each participating person will have a gift and the game is over.  (It may sound complicated, but it is really easy when you see it in action, and is a really fun time.)

Also, CAS awards will be announced and given out during the party.

The Holiday Party is open to members and their guests.

Fish Growth
Moonlight Gouramis

Competition Duration: 5/7/2010 through 11/5/2010

Moonlight Gouramis

"The Moonlight Gourami has a basic silvery body with little to no other markings. The fins will have a pearl pattern of lighter silver. Growing to about 6 inches in length, males have very sharply pointed dorsal fins, while the females have a fan shaped dorsal fin. It is best to keep this species as a pair, or harem style, one male with several females. The Moonlight Gourami will prefer an aquarium with some cover, live plants, fake plants or driftwood, where it may spend most of its time hovering in one place. They will eat most prepared foods, be sure to include a vegetable based food in its diet. As can all labyrinth fish, Gouramis can go to the surface and breathe directly from the atmosphere, though this is rarely required in a home aquarium."  - Petsolutions

Fish Growth
Purple Passion Danios

Competition Duration: 5/7/2010 through 11/5/2010

Purple Passion Danios

"These fish made their first appearance in the United States in 2003, when they were brought over from the UK. The full adult of this fish will typically have a very bright red/orange underside, except for this feature many fish keepers who haven’t seen a Purple Passion before may mistake it for a Pearl Danio. Danios prefer to travel in schools and, if kept singly, can become bored and pick on other fish, but typically without any real damage."  - Petsolutions

October General Meeting:

Friday, October 1st, 2010   7:30 pm
St. James Episcopal Church
8235 W 44th Avenue
Wheat Ridge, CO

Program:  David Gross – David will talk about the captive marine fish industry.

October Speaker is David Gross from New York:
Curator at The Wild Center,  Natural History Museum of the Adirondacks

David Gross is an aquatic biologist with more than 30 years experience working in public aquariums.  He is currently Curator at The Wild Center; a new Natural History Museum of the Adirondacks in upstate New York, where he oversees a collection of 60 species; from various trout to ravens, porcupine and otters.  He got his start at the John G. Shedd Aquarium in Chicago as an aquarist, diver and collector.  He was then recruited to help open the National Aquarium in Baltimore where he was in charge of the 335,000 gallon Atlantic Coral Reef exhibit and the 60+ volunteers who scuba dive to feed the fish.  He was then Director of the National Aquarium in Washington DC for nearly 10 years and helped focus attention on NOAA’s National Marine Sanctuary program.  Landry’s Restaurants hired David to help the company develop an Aquarium restaurant concept, and was Corporate Curator for the Rainforest Café chain, and designed a public aquarium for Houston.  [Landry’s also purchased the Colorado Ocean Journey in Denver and have transformed that aquarium.]  In 2003 David joined Maritech, a marine aquaculture company, and helped launch the Proaquatix brand of captive raised marine fish.  When hurricanes devastated the company in 2004 he moved to upstate NY to help open The Wild Center.

David will talk about the captive marine fish industry.  Maritech, located in Vero Beach, FL was one of only 3 US firms who were breeding marine fish for the tropical fish trade in 2003; the others being nearby ORA at Harbor Branch in Fort Pierce and C-Quest in Puerto Rico.  Proaquatix took over operation of C-Quest in April 2004 and ran that company for 2 years.  The hurricanes in 2004 were a huge challenge when they demolished most of the facilities.  Proaquatix has since been reconstituted and rebuilt.

More than 95% of the freshwater fish available in the US today are raised in fish farms – many are near Tampa. Marine fish are, for the most part, wild caught. Clownfish, dottybacks, and cleaner gobies have been available captive bred for quite some time now, but Proaquatix also provides less known tooth blennies and watchman gobies.  Production of pompano and cobia is part of their food fish venture, and often supplied to public aquariums such as Sea World.  Lookdowns are now also available.  Another type of effort being made in sustainable fisheries is the use of larval light traps and crest nets.  David will also speak about this promising new method for supplying the tropical fish trade.

Promptness Award:  Make sure that you are at the general meeting by 7:30 for your chance to win the Promptness Award.

Monthly Bowl Show:
The October Bowl Show will consist of:

-------- COMMENTS --------
hey, I was just wanting to notify your members of this upcoming event we're having in Oklahoma City.  I didn't see a forum on your site and I noticed it conflicts with your monthly meeting but here's the info anyways.  maybe a few of your members might want to make the trip:

Hello everyone, I just wanted to let you know about an event we're having if you havn't already heard.  The Oklahoma Aquarium Association (OKAA) is hosting the Federation Of Texas Aquarium Associations (FOTAS) convention this year.  I know this is a little late notice but I wanted to get all the details hashed out before I sent out these messages which took a lot longer than I'd expected.  Anyways, the event is September 3rd-5th (Labor Day weekend) In Oklahoma City.  There are a lot of people coming from Texas as well as NW Arkansas, a few people I've heard from in Kansas City and some others that are going to be traveling through the state and found out about the event.  I get the feeling this is gonna be huge and I promise it'll be worth the drive.  Speaker lineup is Gerald Griffin, Michi Tobler, David Stewart, Mark Denaro, Denny Rogers and Dean Hougen.  I have a complete list of topics, show information, rental tank information, banquet and event information and anything else you might need to know on our website at www.theokaa.org   The information will either be found on the homepage in the "Articles" box or in our Forum under the Meetings Topic.  I've tried to put FOTAS really big on everything so it stands out.  If there's information you don't find, please post a question on our forum or email me at okaquariumassociation@gmail.com   We have a special rate at the hotel for the event so be sure and let them know.  Also, please let me know asap if you need any rental tanks, entries to the show or plan to attend the banquet.

thanks, Kyle Osterholt

Gary has been keeping fish since he was 10 and has been associated with the organized hobby for the last 28 years.  He is a member of the Missouri Aquarium Society (MASI) and has held various positions in the club.  He is a grand master breeder in MASI, and has won "Best Fish In Show" on four different occasions, twice with rainbowfish.

In the fall of 1987 he started the Rainbowfish Study Group of North America (RSG).  He got in fish photography mainly because there weren't many quality pictures of rainbowfish.  He has had his photos published in FAMA, TFH and AFM and has published several articles for the Aquarium Fish Magazine and TFH.

In 2002 he imported eight new rainbowfish into North America from the world explorer, Heiko Bleher, including the Millennium rainbow, the Zigzag and the dwarf parva rainbowfish.  In 2003 he made his second trip to Australia and did some more collecting while there.  In 2005 he took the rainbowfish collectors dream trip – collecting in Papua, the western portion of New Guinea.  He made another trip back in 2008 and brought back rainbowfish that have never been in the hobby before including Chilatherina alleni.  He is currently running over 90 tanks and keeping over 65 species and locations of rainbowfish and blue-eyes.
