December Holiday Party: Holiday Party, Pot Luck, Awards, and Gift Exchange

Our Holiday Party / Potluck for December will be held at:
6:00pm on Saturday December 11th.

Anyone who can assist with set-up and
decorating, please come at 4:30

Bring Food at 5:30

Each family is requested to bring a side dish or dessert.

Anyone who would like to participate in our ‘White Shark’ gift exchange should bring an un-wrapped fish related gift in a paper bag. These gifts are very fun and while there is not any limits on price range, they usually value between $5 and $20 and are in some way fish related, though they do not need to be aquarium supplies. The unlabeled gifts are placed on a table and numbers are drawn to participate.  When your number is called, you have the option to pick a new gift from the table or “steal” a gift from someone else.  Once a gift has been held by the same person three times, they keep the gift and it can no longer be stolen.  When all the gifts are taken from the table, each participating person will have a gift and the game is over.  (It may sound complicated, but it is really easy when you see it in action, and is a really fun time.)

Also, CAS awards will be announced and given out during the party.

The Holiday Party is open to members and their guests.

    Program: Ted Judy

A quick flip through any fish hobbyist magazine will almost surely find an article by Ted Judy, and he often can be found traveling the world on fish collecting trips and speaking at clubs and events.

He also has his own website where articles and information about his fish room can be found as well as purchase of fish http://tedsfishroom.com/

Definitely check out this information about Ted Judy:   “A Little More About Ted”  - http://www.tfhmagazine.com/blogs/2009/11/18/all-about-ted-judy/

Ted Judy is an aquarist with over 25 years of fish keeping and fish breeding experience. He is a generalist who enjoys all types of fish, from anabantids to tetras., and always finds plenty of space in his fish room for species from West Africa – especially the dwarf cichlids. Ted has served on the board of trustees of the American Cichlid Association and is an active member of the Milwaukee Aquarium Society. He also maintains the web sites www.tedsfishroom.com and www.forum.apistogramma.com   -  TFH Magazine

He was involved in the year long breeders challenge that TFH ran last year between him and Mike Hellwig where he spawned over 135 species during the year.

“Ted Judy enjoys all types of fish and has kept and bred a variety of fish over the last 25 years. He keeps a special eye out for dwarf cichlids, though, especially those from West Africa. Ted is one of the most popular and knowledgeable all-around speakers in the United States--definitely not a speaker to miss.” -http://www.coastfishclub.com/files/Showfish_August_2008.pdf

    Plant Growth
    Sagittaria subulata (Narrow Leaf Sag)

    Competition Duration: 4/1/2011 through 10/7/2011

    Aquarium Plants Profile: Sagittaria subulata
     (Narrow Leaf Sag)

    INFO FROM: http://www.freshwateraquariumplants.com/plantprofiles/narrowsag.html

Grows to a height of 8 to 16 inches (Mid to background)
The width of each stem is about .25 inches, based on leaf growth
     Moderate to high lighting (1.5 - 4 watts/gal)
Optimum temperature range is 64.4 to 82.4 degrees

Sagittaria subulata is an ideal, undemanding foreground plant whose short runners form a compact group. Place individual plants 2-4 cm apart. In the aquarium it sometimes sends a long flower stem to the surface, and small white flowers unfold just above the water surface. (Partial Excerpt From Tropica)

Sagittaria Subulata is an easy to grow rosette plant that will thrive in most aquariums. The plant typically grows to a height of 8 to 16 inches, usually tallest under high light conditions. The width of each stem is about .25 inches, based on leaf growth. The leaf is linear to strap shaped light green submersed.

In order to achieve strong growth the substrate should contain iron and light is less important. Planted in a group or as a standalone this aquarium plant can be striking. Sagittaria Subulata can grow well in both hard and slightly soft water. Optimum growth temperature is 64.4 to 82.4 degrees. It can withstand temps from very low to 84 degrees.

Sagittaria subulata requires low to high lighting (1.5 - 4 watts/gal), Saggitaria Subulata grows quickly and propagates by runners which will form a dense grouping producing 2 - 3 leaves and one runner per month.

    Don's Notes:

My experience with this aquarium plant is that Sagittaria subulata is very easy to grow and does not like to be disturbed once planted. In most instances this aquarium plant does not grow higher than about 8 inches! This makes it an excellent candidate for sides and corners in the aquarium or to offset driftwood or rocks! The best way to plant Saggitaria subulata is to push the roots all the way down and then pull up so that just the top of the root crown is showing. When this plant is growing well, the number of leaves and runners will increase in a monthly period. Sagittaria subulata does much better with sufficient iron fertilizer in the substrate. An individual plant has a fountain appearance. This plant is also found in brackish waters and so will do well in a brackish setup!

This aquarium plant is indigenous to the Eastern U.S. and South America.

    MACNA XXIII Sept 9th - 11th, 2011

    Des Moines, Iowa

    Not a CAS Sponsored Event

MACNA is the oldest marine show in the country.  It is a three day event held in a different city every fall.  For the last decade it has been on the east coast in locations such as Orlando, Atlanta, and New Jersey.  This year, it is being held in Des Moines Iowa!

A typical MACNA usually draws between 1000-1500 people.  These are people whose sole passion is saltwater aquariums.  Like you, they want to learn more, and talk to other people about their aquarium without getting the funny look they usually get when talking to non reef keepers.  This year, we have people coming from Saudi Arabia, Italy, England, Australia, and several other countries just to attend this event.

MACNA starts on Friday, and ends Sunday afternoon.  During the daytime, the tradeshow is open with over 100 booths, and many demonstrations.  In another room, world renowned speakers give presentations.

On Friday night, there will be a welcome reception with dinner, drinks, and a band.  On Saturday night, there will be a banquet where the aquarist of the year will be awarded, as well as the winner of the annual scholarship.  This is also a time where many vendors will make large donations to the community hosting the event.

          Greetings,

Wanted to share with you that there is a major Coral and Marine Aquarium event being held on March 12th at the Downtown Aquarium.  This is the 4th year for ReefStock.  I know that some of your members also dabble in saltwater....  there will be items there of interest to planted tank fans as well.  Lots of LED based lighting systems and other new cool technology on display.  Speakers include Julian Sprung!!

For more information, please see http://reefstock.reefbuilders.com/

We are also holding a major club event involving the Denver Area Reef Club (DARC), Southern Colorado Marine Aquarium Society (SCMAS) and Marine Aquarium Society of Colorado (MASC) on April 16th in Highlands Ranch.  Sadly, that coincides with your big Spring Auction event.  This will involve a frag swap, garage sale (used items), speakers, workshops, science fair and raffle.

Would be great if you could promote ReefStock to your members.

          Thanks,

Jim Durkee has been a certified scuba diver since 1965 and a P.A.D.I. open water instructor from 1983 to 2000. All that time, when he wasn't with students, he had a camera with him. He lead scuba dive trips around the world to many of it's oceans. Since the TSA has made travel so difficult, and you can't lock your bags, rather than lose his gear, he changed from scuba trips to wildlife trips. In the last 16 years he has traveled from 82 degrees 20 minutes north to 65 degrees south photographing wildlife. He loves showing his pictures to anyone that is willing to take the time to look at them. He has a great collection of wildlife photos that could entertain anyone who is interested in all animals.
